Tuesday, Oct. 12
GSA "My Coming Out" Event on Zoom
Gay-Straight Alliance members, AACC faculty and staff share stories of discovering and living in their LGBTQ identities. 2-3 p.m. and 3-4 p.m.
Grab some popcorn and a soda and join members of AACC’s Gay-Straight Alliance as we watch and discuss “How to Survive a Plague.” It’s the untold story of the efforts that turned AIDS into a mostly manageable condition, and the improbable group of young men and women who helped it happen. With no scientific training, they infiltrated government agencies and the pharmaceutical industry, and helped identify promising new compounds, moving them through trials and into drugstores in record time. These drugs saved their lives and ended the darkest days of the epidemic, while virtually emptying AIDS wards in American hospitals. 7-9 p.m.
Wednesday, Oct. 13
AACC Community Quilt
Join us for a quilt-making workshop and discussion as part of AACC’s celebration of Coming Out Week. The workshop, rooted in the idea of art as activism, will lead you through the creation of your own small quilt
block. You’ll be invited to include your quilt block in the larger AACC Community Quilt, a multiyear community art project that will collect and assemble individually made quilt blocks created in workshops throughout the year that are held in conjunction with AACC’s diversity programming. 2-3 p.m.
Thursday, Oct. 14
LGBTQ Community Resource Panel
Members from The Pride Center of Maryland, Chase Brexton Health Services, the National Alliance on Mental Illness
Maryland, the Trevor Project and other local community groups will discuss the services and resources that these organizations offer for LGBTQ individuals. This event will help inform LGBTQ students that they are not alone and that there are numerous people and groups in the area that exist to help LGBTQ people receive affirming care and necessary resources. Noon-1:30 p.m.
