Black History Month


AACC joins the community to in honor of this year’s Black History Month with the theme Unmasking Black Excellence. A number of events are planned throughout the month to inspire, educate and promote engagement in meaningful discussion.


FEB. 1-28

The AACC Black History Month Art Exhibit and Reception This AACC Black History Month exhibit will feature artist Calvin A. Coleman. The monthlong exhibition will host an in-person reception on Thursday, Feb. 16, from 4 to 5 p.m. Pascal Center Art Gallery


“Did You Know” Social Media Campaign Throughout Black History Month, the School of Health Sciences’ Facebook and Instagram pages (@aacc_healthsciences) will highlight individuals and groups who have made significant contributions to health care.


#BLACKOUT Throughout February, students and employees are encouraged to spend a minimum of $20.23 each week at a Black-owned business. The overall purpose is to show how powerful it is when we are intentional about pouring into minority owned businesses. A picture of all receipts should be emailed to wshabazz@aacc.edu.

Workshop with Renowned Artist Comacell Brown Jr. Students will have the opportunity to paint with renowned artist Comacell Brown Jr. during this workshop. The artist will paint on one large canvas while leading students to paint on a second canvas simultaneously. Sponsored by the Art department and Linda Páez. 12:30 p.m. CADE, second floor lounge

Boldly Beautiful Ethnic Hair Care on the Great Plains Movie Screening Health Sciences staff member Christina Thurston will offer a screening of her documentary featured in the 2022 Twin Cities Black Film Festival. The documentary centers around Christina Thurston, an African American woman from Maryland who relocates to Brookings, South Dakota. She soon realizes that she doesn’t have the resources to maintain her hair or someone to style it. Watch her journey as she connects with people in the community to find answers and solutions. 3:30-5 p.m. CADE 219

Black Male Summit: Face Forward (Black Male Branding and Presence) The Black Male Institute (BMI) presents: The Black Male Summit. This online symposium will feature several guest speakers discussing topics designed to help you build your personal brand. Join us for three information-packed sessions on resume writing, maximizing your social media presence, as well as personal finance tips to assist with your overall wealth. The Network: HBCU Lounge Learn more about historically Black colleges and universities (HBCU) and meet with faculty and staff regarding their HBCU alma maters. Participate in scavenger hunts, games, real-life representation/testimonies, and get advice from alumni. Spoken Word: Unmasking Excellence In honor of Black History Month, the Office of Student Engagement presents an evening of the spoken word featuring Backpack Jeff, local poets and you!
